Anyone who has taken on a used offset press knows that pneumatic faults account for roughly 15 to 20 percent of day-to-day repair calls. Feeders that speed up and slow down, untidy delivery stacks and frequent double sheets often trace back not to mechanical accuracy but to air. The pneumatic system is also the easiest area to gloss over during inspection, because it is quiet and hard to see with the naked eye. Only a methodical check during the trial run catches the problems on the spot.
- Start at the pressure source: compressor and receiver working pressure should hold steady between 0.6 and 0.8 MPa; frequent loading and unloading indicates leakage.
- Work through the lines: hardened, cracked hose and loose push-in fittings are the main leak causes, and soapy water proves it immediately.
- Valves and cylinders: check that separation nozzles, hold-down feet and transfer nozzles act fully; diaphragms and seals are the worst areas for ageing.
- Vacuum pump condition: weak suction at transfer wheels usually means worn pump vanes, and a single-sheet transfer test during the trial shows it best.
Pressure source: start with the compressor
After start-up, watch the gauge: fluctuation around rated pressure should not exceed 0.05 MPa. Open the drain valve at the bottom of the receiver at the same time; a large volume of oil and water mixture means the downstream filter elements have failed and will eventually contaminate solenoid valves and cylinders. If the compressor cycles noticeably faster than it should, there is almost certainly a leak.
Feeder and valves: the root of unstable feed
When sheets skew, are missed or double, check separation nozzle airflow, hold-down foot travel and nozzle diaphragms in that order. Perished and cracked diaphragms are the most common problem on used machines: the part costs only tens of RMB, but if it is missed during inspection the resulting downtime costs far more than the part. Valve phase misalignment needs a specialist to adjust, so ask the seller to demonstrate a no-load sheet run.
Three-step self-check in ten minutes
Listen: with the press running without load, get close to the lines and listen for hissing leaks. Apply: brush soapy water on fittings and both ends of cylinders. Test: run fifty single sheets in a row and check whether the delivery stack front edge is straight and consistent. After those three steps the health of the pneumatic system is largely clear.
Conclusion: Pneumatics are the biggest hidden cost behind a cheap used offset press. Work through pressure, lines, valves and vacuum pump in that order during the trial run, using the listen, apply and test routine, and most faults can be pinned down in ten minutes, giving you leverage on price and warranty terms.
