[Abstract] This guide focuses on five core inspection criteria for used KBA Rapida 105 and 106 presses: feeder head, printing units, delivery, alcohol dampening, and electrical systems. It compares the suitability of the two generations for heavy board jobs and explains the 128-point inspection standard developed by PrintM in cooperation with TÜV Rheinland.
I. Why the Rapida Series Remains a Mainstream Choice in the Used Market
As KBA's flagship product line in the medium-format commercial offset segment, the Rapida 105 and Rapida 106 have maintained leading cumulative installation numbers since entering the Chinese market in the late 1990s. Compared with Heidelberg Speedmaster models in the same class, the Rapida feeder head offers better adaptability to thin paper and lightweight coated stock, and the mature supply chain for domestically produced spare parts makes it more attractive to small and medium-sized printing plants sensitive to long-term maintenance costs. It must be emphasized that when selecting a used Rapida, inspection requirements must be strictly enforced to avoid hidden pitfalls in the delivery, collating, and electrical cabinet areas.
II. Five Core Inspection Criteria
First, the feeder head: after startup, observe the synchronization of the separating suction nozzles and the forwarding suction nozzles. Feeding 50 consecutive sheets should not produce double feeds, missed feeds, or skewing; otherwise, air circuit leakage or cam wear is likely. Second, the folding and cutting section: run at 80% of maximum mechanical speed for 20 minutes, paying attention to the stability of folding roller pressure and knife phase. The third-fold 8-page folding accuracy should be within ±0.5 mm. Third, the collating and delivery section: check chain gripper tension, gripper body wear, and synchronization of the delivery jogger plates; otherwise, collating misalignment and smudging may occur. Fourth, alcohol dampening: measure the water pan level and isopropanol concentration, and it is recommended that the buyer conduct an on-site measurement of daily consumption. Fifth, the electrical system: open the main electrical cabinet to inspect the brands of relays and servo drives and any signs of replacement. For the main control console, priority should be given to a Heidelberg CPC system of the same generation or KBA's new-generation Logika console.
III. Selection Differences Between the Rapida 105 and 106
The Rapida 105 is more oriented toward book and commercial short-run printing, with a maximum mechanical speed of 15,000 sheets per hour. The Rapida 106, building on the 105, enhances adaptability to heavy paper and board, reaching up to 18,000 sheets per hour. If the main business consists of wine labels, pharmaceutical cartons, cosmetic boxes, and other heavy board orders, the 106 offers better cost-effectiveness. If the focus is on periodicals, art books, and thin-paper manuals, the 105 has lower maintenance costs.
